04 Oct Year 2 visit to St Mary’s Church
On Thursday, Year 2 visited St Mary’s Church in Beddington Park. The children have been learning all about the Church as a Christian place of worship during their religious education lessons. They have learnt about the features and purpose of the church and its importance to Christians. The visit consolidated the children’s learning and they were able to see first hand what it is like to be in the Church and to find out more about Christian worship and the features of a church. The children listened to Father Andrew respectfully, answering his questions and asking their own questions too. They looked at how the font is used in a christening ceremony, found out the purpose of frankincense being lit inside the church and heard the church bell ringing. Once they had listened to Father Andrew, the children were split into class groups to find out about different parts of the church. The children observed the alter and found out about its purpose in Christian worship. They looked at the painting and stained glass windows and heard the story behind them. They also created drawings of different parts of the church. The children really benefited from this visit and look forward to visiting again at Christmas time for the Christmas Carol service.
